THE STORY
A ruler across the fingers — and a lifelong passion.
Shenton first picked up a guitar at the age of eight, after his parents bought him his first acoustic instrument. From the moment he held it in his hands, he knew it would become a lifelong passion.
His early lessons were with his brother, Braid — a strict disciplinarian who would call out chords and expect every student to play them instantly. Anyone who was late, or worse still played the wrong chord, risked a rap across the fingers with a ruler. Fortunately, Shenton always stayed sharp and managed to avoid the punishment.
The first time Shenton heard George Benson’s iconic instrumental Breezin’, he was hooked for life. He played the track every day simply for the joy of it, and George Benson’s music has remained a major influence ever since.
